Huntcliff C.O.P.S. Program
Our neighborhood is active in the Gwinnett County Neighborhood Watch program, called C.O.P.S. (Community Oriented Police Service). This program is designed to develop a good working relationship with our local county police department, and to make our community safer by having in place a network of volunteers who serve as Block Captains, whose role is to be a contact person should someone wish to report any suspicious and possibly illegal activity in Huntcliff. Should any such activity be reported, the Block Captains contact the neighborhood C.O.P.S. Liaison and nearby neighbors, and the network kicks into action with e-mails and phone calls to alert as many of our neighbors as possible. Tammy Knox is the current C.O.P.S. Liaison for Huntcliff. Since we are a master community (a neighborhood that has been in the C.O.P.S. program for many years), we are required to participate in three activities a year. One is a Block Captain meeting with our C.O.P.S. officer in the spring. Everyone interested in this program is urged to attend. Our assigned officer will review the past year’s crime incidents for our area and have a short educational program. Watch your e-mails for further information about this meeting. Secondly, we must do a C.O.P.S. awareness event. Traditionally, we have set up a table display at the annual pool opening, promoting the C.O.P.S. program. We usually get a cake to share with our neighbors, and someone will be there to answer your questions, recruit Block Captains, and update residents’ personal contact information. Finally, C.O.P.S. volunteers must attend the annual C.O.P.S. festival, which is usually held in October. This is a fun and free way to find out more about the public safety resources in our community. These 3 things represent a very small investment of time to keep this program going in our neighborhood. Currently, we have some areas in our neighborhood that do not have Block Captains. We need to fill all of the Block Captain positions and have the channels of communication open when we do need to get the word out. Your assistance is needed to help make our C.O.P.S. Program a success. Learn more about becoming a Block Captain by visiting our table at the pool opening on May 16th, or contact Tammy Knox at wknox10@msn.com. NOTE: The Gwinnett County Police non-emergency number is 770-513-5100. This is the number Huntcliff residents should first use to report any non-emergency incidents or suspicious activities in the neighborhood. An example of this would be a person doing door-to-door sales without an identification badge. Of course, for all serious emergencies, call 911.
